Fused glass artist, Katherine Joanna, is a unique, creative visionary producing truly beautiful pieces of mixed media bespoke glass art for your home and garden.
Katherine has 12 years’ experience and uses a mixture of techniques that are either created during the firing process when in the kiln, harnessing the heat to manipulate the glass. A series of methods to create design elements that are permanently fixed during the firing, as well as cold working to professionally finish the pieces before mounting.
Katherine’s background is as a Professional Engineer and she uses this knowledge to fully understand and push the boundaries of the kiln formed process.

I start with the raw material. Glass comes in many forms as nominally 3mm thick sheets, powders or fit (small lumps like sugar). Everything starts off flat as it goes into the kiln on its first firing. Glass naturally flows at temperature but likes to be 6 mm if you want less, you alter the temperature or thicker you need to prevent it flowing by creating a dam.
Pieces can go through multiple firings, from the hottest to the coolest (800 deg c down to 580 deg c). This allows you to create a piece that is flat, with multiple layers, prior to slumping it into another shape. I then move to the cold working workshop. This houses a selection of diamond grinders, flat lapidary machines and saws along with a sand blaster. This cold work is what adds the shine to the piece and really finishes it off.
I would like to share with you my latest creation. A personal gift from myself and a colleague to celebration the 25 years of partnership between Rolls-Royce (where I was engineer for 22 years) and Loughborough university.
I used the ‘Harness the flow’ technique to create an abstract on their university shield. I have included a few of the set up pictures as well. My husband, Simon, made a wooden plinth from an old physics bench which seemed very apt.
